SVN: How to ignore folder without removing it from local working copy

Let’s say you want to ignore tmp files to be stored on the Subversion repository and you have already added those files to it.
Follow the steps below to get SVN to ignore that directory.

$ cd /path/to/tmp
$ svn status
$ svn rm * --force --keep-local
$ svn ci -m 'cleaning up tmp directory'
$ svn propset svn:ignore '*' .
$ cd ..
$ svn ci -m 'committing changes on tmp directory, ignore property added' tmp
